Fellowship Update #1

In blog posts like this, I’ll explain what I’m getting up to with the Fellowship — for example, during the research and ideation phase I’ll be focused on how repetition and rhythm function in autistic sensory experience, and I’ll use this space reflect on my personal experience of this.

I’ll also share what I’ve been listening to and analysing – whether this is pop-centric works by Feist and tUnE-yArDs, or ambient textural works like Julianna Barwick, or classical/jazz works.

Blog posts may include any concepts from ethnomusicology and neurodivergent theory that I’ve read, in which I have felt ‘seen’, or which may contribute to the Fellowship work more broadly.

I may also share portions of interviews with autistic musicians and listeners (with permission, of course!), to document what I’ve learned about their sensory and rhythmic experiences with music. I hope this will contribute to greater visibility of autistic musicians. When I engage in mentorship and co-writes, I’ll aim to get some photos, to capture the collaborative process — the real, messy, joyful work of making music and learning together.

Balancing deep research with parenting responsibilities will require careful pacing, and I also intend to candidly share the ups and downs of that journey. This is an extension of my previous advocacy with the Mother Lode project.

Once I get to the Creative Development stage, I’ll be sharing snippets of audio, works-in-progress, and creating and rich archive of the album’s development – fun!
