Magnetic art-pop alchemist Georgia Fields returns with shimmering new single Night Swimming, releasing Wednesday 8 July.
Produced by frequent collaborator Josh Barber (Gretta Ray; Queenie), Night Swimming is a slow-burning alt-pop song about nocturnal overthinking; about the spiral of thoughts that arrive after midnight, when your brain won't let you sleep.
The track finds Fields in a more spacious, emotionally immediate register: her intimate vocal floating above a warm, overdriven guitar riff, with crunchy percussion and luminous vibraphone rippling at the surface. Night Swimming is the second single from her upcoming fourth album, due in 2027.
“Night Swimming came out of this tendency I have to overthink at night, and go swimming in my thoughts,” Fields explains.
“Often it turns into anxiety or rumination – and nighttime is obviously the worst time to do this, because there’s nothing practical you can do about your worries, and no one is awake to help you calm down.”
“On the flip side, as a neurodivergent person I also really love the pristine, velvety solitude of night time. I’ve often found those quiet midnight hours creatively productive and vital to my wellbeing. This song holds both those feelings at once.”
Night Swimming arrives hot on the heels of Chameleon, the album's first single, released in April to coincide with Autism Acceptance Month. While Chameleon explored autistic masking and the instinct to shapeshift through neurotypical social worlds, Night Swimming turns inward, examining the private landscape of sensory overwhelm, and self-compassion.
Both Night Swimming and Chameleon continue Fields' trajectory into emotionally rich, left-of-centre indie-pop. Together, the two lead singles offer a glimpse into an album exploring repetition, identity, sensory experience, and finding joy in the patterns that make us who we are.
Fields has been a darling of the Naarm independent music scene for almost two decades. Her third album Hiraeth (2022) was met with critical acclaim, receiving four stars from The Australian, who praised its “meticulously crafted art-pop arrangements”.
In the years following Hiraeth, Fields developed and honed a dynamic live-looping show, combining electric guitar and mini-synth with percussion, beatboxing, samples, and vocal harmonies to create expansive arrangements in real time. She toured this show relentlessly, opening for artists such as Katie Noonan, Ella Hooper, and Pierce Brothers.
That same restless, kinetic energy of her live-looping show fed directly into this forthcoming new album, where the composed elegance of Hiraeth makes room for a sound that is more wiry, immediate, and alive.
“When I was in the process of being formally identified as autistic, there was a lot of negative attention placed on ‘restricted and repetitive behaviours’, a key diagnostic criteria. I was touring heavily at the time, and realised I was literally making music with a loop pedal: the musical embodiment of repetition. A big part of this new album is embracing my love of loops, melodic riffs, and patterns, and reclaiming autistic joy in music.”
